Imaging via subgrid upscaling and reverse time migration

چکیده
Reverse time migration produces an image by crosscorrelating the solution of the wave equation solved forward in time with the wave equation solved backwards in time. Solution of the wave equation can be computationally prohibitive for large subsurface regions. Therefore one typically combines a finite difference discretization of the wave equation with a parallel computing paradigm such as domain decomposition. Operator or subgrid upscaling is an alternate technique which produces a coarse scale solution of the wave equation that captures fine scale information. In the computationally intensive part of the algorithm one achieves ideal speedup without ghost cell allocation or communication. In this work we show the first images from reverse time migration (RTM) combined with operator upscaling. These upscaled images capture essentially the same velocity heterogeneities as RTM using the full fine grid solution.

An a Priori Error Analysis of Operator Upscaling for the Acoustic Wave Equation
In many earth science problems, the scales of interest range from centimeters to kilometers. Computer power and time limitations prevent inclusion of all the fine-scale features in most models. However, upscaling methods allow creation of physically realistic and computationally feasible models. Instead of solving the problem completely on the fine scale, upscaling methods produce a coarse-scal...
متن کاملOn a numerical subgrid upscaling algorithm for Stokes-Brinkman equations
This paper discusses a numerical subgrid resolution approach for solving the Stokes-Brinkman system of equations, which is describing coupled flow in plain and in highly porous media. Various scientific and industrial problems are described by this system, and often the geometry and/or the permeability vary on several scales. A particular target is the process of oil filtration. In many complic...

In this paper, first the limitations of the ray-based method and the one-way wave-field extrapolation migration (WEM) in imaging steeply dipping structures are discussed by some examples. Then a new method of the reverse time migration (RTM), used in imaging such complex structures is presented. The proposed method uses a new wave-field extrapolator called the Leapfrog-Rapid Expansion Method (L...
متن کاملA Modified Nested-Gridding for Upscaling–Downscaling in Reservoir Simulation
The upscaled models of reservoirs result in coarse representation of flow for simulation gridblocks. This representation discards subgrid heterogeneities and flow complexities which can lead to an inaccurate performance prediction for reservoir processes. To tackle the problem, reconstruction techniques such as multiscale or upscaling–downscaling methods have been developed to recapture the sub...
